Bar & Rod Rolling
Charter Steel's rolling mills produce round, hot-rolled coil in sizes ranging from 7/32" to 1-9/16" (5.5 to 40 mm) in diameter in finished coil sizes ranging from 4,000 to 6,000 pounds. View size chart.
Whether produced at the Saukville melt shop or purchased worldwide, we utilize a full range of billets to create special bar quality steel, including:
- Electric Arc Furnace: Ingot, Bloom Cast, and Direct Cast
- Basic Oxygen Furnace: Ingot, Bloom Cast, and Direct Cast
Maintaining the steel's surface quality and microstructural integrity is the primary focus of the rolling process. Charter Steel's walking-beam furnaces heat the billets rapidly and uniformly to prevent deformities. Precisely controlled pass designs in our finishing mills allow Charter Steel to roll tight tolerance rod and bar.
Our controlled-cooling conveyor deck carefully spreads the newly formed rod coil rings to control their microstructure as they cool. Larger diameter bar product is spooled into a consistently sized coil packages for uniformly slower cooling.
Quality control inspectors check dimensional characteristics and inspect the surface for any discontinuities or deformities. Additional tests may include:
- Upset Test
- Tensile strength
- Reduction of area
- Rockwell hardness
- Microstructural evaluation
Approved coils are then compacted, strapped, tagged, weighed and readied for shipment or further processing by Charter Steel. Inspectors use a spectroanalyzer to conduct a final check of the steel's chemistry just before shipping to ensure customers get exactly what they ordered.
